Family Counselling Kelowna & Vernon

Families can love each other deeply and still struggle to understand one another.

Sometimes the same patterns keep repeating themselves and life’s stressors can make it harder to communicate, understand one another, and stay connected. Major life transitions, parenting challenges, separation, or changes in family structure can leave everyone feeling unsettled or unsure of what comes next. During these times, it can be difficult to navigate strong emotions and find a way forward together.

If this sounds familiar, family counselling in Kelowna and Vernon can help you navigate this differently so that you can understand one another and find a way forward with greater connection.

Family relationships are some of the most important relationships we have, which is why conflict can feel so painful. Ongoing conflict, misunderstanding, and disconnection can leave family members feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or stuck in the same patterns. Parents, children, teenagers, adult siblings, and extended family may all find themselves struggling to communicate, feeling misunderstood, or pulling away from one another. Good intentions alone are not always enough to shift these patterns.

Our family counsellors provide a safe space to slow things down, understand what is happening underneath the conflict, and help family members communicate in ways that create greater connection, trust, and understanding.

Common Questions

No. The right approach depends on what your family is experiencing. Sometimes it is helpful for everyone to attend together, while other situations may benefit from parent or caregiver sessions, individual sessions, or a combination. We can talk through what would make the most sense for your family.

You do not need to know exactly what you need before reaching out. A consultation can help you talk through what is happening and determine what type of support may be most appropriate for your family.

Your therapist will help create a safe and respectful space to understand what is happening within your relationships, identify patterns, and practise new ways of communicating, managing emotions, and repairing after difficult moments.

Counselling can help you understand what is underneath recurring conflict and identify the patterns that keep it going. You will also develop practical tools for communicating, de-escalating conflict, and reconnecting with one another.

Not necessarily. A child’s behaviour or emotional struggles can sometimes be connected to what is happening within the broader family or their environment. Counselling may include individual support for your child but it can also involve parents or caregivers to help everyone understand what is happening and find ways to support change.

This is common. You do not need everyone to see things in exactly the same way before reaching out. We can begin by understanding each person’s perspective and creating a space where different experiences can be heard without blame.

Yes. Blended families can bring unique challenges around parenting roles, boundaries, discipline, loyalty, communication, and expectations. Counselling can help family members understand these dynamics and develop healthier ways of navigating them together.

Yes. Separation and divorce can be a significant transition for everyone in a family. Counselling can support communication, co-parenting, changing family roles, and helping children and adults adjust to a new family structure.

Yes. Separation and divorce can be a significant transition for everyone in a family. Counselling can support communication, co-parenting, changing family roles, and helping children and adults adjust to a new family structure.

This is okay. Family counselling can move at a pace that allows each person to feel heard and respected. Your therapist can help determine when individual, smaller-group, or whole-family conversations are most appropriate.

Every family is different. Some families come for a few sessions to address a specific concern or transition, while others benefit from longer-term support to shift established patterns and strengthen relationships. After your first session, your therapist can work with you to develop a plan based on your family’s needs and goals.

Yes. We have therapists in both Kelowna and Vernon offering in-person family counselling. Online sessions may also be available depending on the therapist and the needs of your family.
